Joan of Arc

Artist Statement

Joan of Arc—young woman, warrior, saint—has captured the imagination for centuries.

My Joan is caught somewhere in between: no longer simply the young woman she was, but not yet the saint history would make of her. She is contemplating what lies ahead.

The figures in the fresco behind her are drawn from various examples of medieval art, gathered and reimagined into a scene of my own. In my mind, they are debating her circumstances—questioning the ethics, the strategy, and the cost of the path before her.

Their conversation reflects an age-old human struggle: whether violence can be morally justified in the pursuit of a righteous or holy end. Joan stands quietly before that debate, poised between conviction and consequence, while history—and all that we have made of her—waits on the other side.
